A Detailed History of ChexTop
ChexTop was conceived by four members of the Smith family. Two brothers and their wives of which one couple , Mike and Paula, after working for a check cashing store in Colorado Springs made the decision that it was the right time to go out on their own. The Severn store was opened right outside the north gate of Ft Meade where it remains today.
WINTER 1992
We have a Good Thing Going
Within a year, ChexTop had grown so much that a decision to open a second location in Morningside. MD. Also located outside the main gates of Andrews Air Force base. This location is still serving the financial needs of military personnel and surrounding areas of PG County and Washington DC.
1993
One couple decided to pursue other career paths which left MIke and Paula in charge with full ownership of both stores till 1999.
1999
Thinking About The Future of ChexTop
Turbulence in the check cashing industry in Maryland causes Mike and Paula to consider opening a new location in another more check cashing business friendly state.
2000
Another State
The 3rd ChexTop location is opened in Columbia, SC right outside the south gates of Ft Jackson. Again with a focus to serve the military community and surrounding areas.
2005
We Expand Again
The fourth location opened in Pasadena Md to serve Annapolis, Glen Burnie and surrounding areas. The Pasadena store is still operating today.
2010
Another Store
A 5th store was opened in in Lexington, SC.
2012
Hard Decisions
South Carolina passes very stringent laws that greatly restrict smaller check companies from being able to do business and a very difficult decision was made to close both SC locations in order to focus on the stores in Maryland.
2020
It Happens.
Covid19 becomes a pandemic! This completely affects how any face to face business provides services. To adapt, ChexTop offers select hours for our elderly customers. ChexTop also reconfigures their website and emphasizes online approvals and convenience. We also added an online Customer Loyalty Program to reward our most active customers.
May 2021
We celebrate our 30th year
With our 3 remaining locations in Severn, Suitland and Pasadena. We realize that today our biggest challenge has been dealing with the ever changing “pandemic climate”. That is staying in business while we have seen our competitors just close their doors. We were not immune to loss of business and we sadly had to let some of our staff go in order to survive. ChexTop has been able to maintain the same excellent customer service in a timely cheerful manner.
